OUR STORY

The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his steps. —Proverbs 16:9

Corbin

Our story began in an atypical fashion. Nkiru and I were set up on a blind date by her sister, Eboni, one of my teaching coworkers. The date went well from my perspective, but Nkiru was not as smitten as I was. She texted me the next day saying she had a nice time but wasn’t interested. I thought that was the end of it! However, later in the summer she reached back out just to check in. She asked if I wanted to go see a movie and I said yes. She got the tickets, and I got the snacks. We ended up talking the entire movie. Most likely to the annoyance of our neighbors! However, I remember thinking, “I like talking with this girl.”

We proceeded to hang out the rest of the summer but just as friends. At the beginning of our relationship, we were just friends. I’d say at the core of our relationship, we have remained friends. We genuinely enjoy spending time together, talking, and traveling. This transformed from friends into dating. We dated casually for the next 4 months until I asked Nkiru to be my girlfriend. She said yes and then 3 weeks later we broke up.

I was devastated and was completely ready to burn the bridge between us out of frustration. However, she reached back out to me, wanting to talk. We got back together, and our relationship has grown stronger because of it. I fully believe that this was an intervention on behalf of the Holy Spirit. Why? Knowing Nkiru has brought me closer in my walk with the Lord, and she has made me a better man. I know very little in this world, but I know one thing. That I want to marry Nkiru and walk through this life with her in good times and bad. Mountain high and valley low. I am forever grateful that I get to marry her.

Nkiru

Our story began in an atypical fashion. Corbin and my sister Eboni are coworkers at Richardson West Jr. High. Eboni began hinting about a teacher who had started visiting her classroom regularly and how nice he was. He was very well-liked by the kids, so that’s how she knew he was legit. Next thing I knew, my mom and Eboni began plotting to set us up. They showed me a picture of him and asked what I thought. I shrugged and said he looked alright. I appreciated that he was smiling in the photo they shared, but staring at the stranger, there was no initial connection. My mom and sister asked if I was at least open to getting to know him, and I said sure. Honestly, I was not exactly elated to be set up, but earlier that year, just five months prior, God had begun to whisper to me that in faith I should get out of my comfort zone when it came to dating.

A couple days after I saw his picture, Eboni reported that Corbin had asked her out on a date. This is my favorite part of the story, because I love telling others about how Corbin was interested in my sister first. He thinks it’s embarrassing, but I love that he appreciated the stunning woman that Eboni is. Well, she panicked and said yes even though she was not interested. The next day, she told him she had changed her mind and instead offered to set him up with me. She told him that she had already been thinking for a while that we would be a good match. First, he asked her to see a picture of me, because he assumed that since I was an engineer, I’d be nerdy and unattractive. Second, he asked her if I was a Christian. Notice the order haha. He agreed to be set up and Eboni gave him my phone number. That same day he texted me, and the rest is history.

Corbin has always been the steady one in our relationship, consistent and present. I wavered more, unsure about whether our relationship would live up to the fairytale picture that I had in my mind of what a relationship is supposed to be and how you are supposed to feel. After some time (and prayer and therapy), I settled down and became more and more assured of how blessed I am to have Corbin by my side. He is funny, loving, selfless, generous, confident, and steadfast. Corbin has brought me closer in my relationship with the Lord by reminding me that love is a choice, fear is a liar, and that God is ordering our steps. Together we hope to love and support each other, family, friends, and the community around us by building cultural bridges and putting Christ first always.
